Indian Summer

by Ron Shafer

The trees withdraw
into themselves,
meditating
on their own roots,
and the souls
of the Grandmothers
rise
dancing
in the singing
grass.
None but the oaks
remember
the dark forest
waiting
underneath
the plowed fields.
